Oxford and the Pre-Raphaelites
As a student at Exeter College, William Morris was exposed to the poetry, art and architecture that came to have a huge influence on his future work. This special tour explores the life and work of William Morris in Oxford, with visits to Christ Church, Exeter College, Oxford Union and more in the company of Alastair Lack, former secretary of the Oxford University Society, who will give a lecture at the hotel.

Day 1: Arrive independently at the Hilton Newbury North from 15.00. This evening there will be a private dinner with wine and an introductory talk by Alastair Lack – ‘The Pre-Raphaelites in Oxford’.
Day 2: Our first visit is to Harris Manchester College to view the beautiful Days of Creation stained glass windows by Edward Burne-Jones, followed by some time in the fabled Oxford Union, where we will view the Old Library. This afternoon we will tour Exeter College where, in 1852, William Morris met lifelong friend and collaborator Edward Burne-Jones. Whilst here we will have time to visit the college chapel and the Morris Room. Finally we travel out to the parish church of Middleton Cheney, which houses wonderful Morris & Co. windows. This evening there will be dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Day 3: Today begins with a visit to the Church of St Michael at the North Gate, one of Oxford’s oldest buildings and where William Morris married Jane Burden in 1859 – we will be able to see their marriage certificate. We will continue on to the world-renowned Ashmolean Museum to view the Thomas Coombe collection which includes outstanding Pre-Raphaelite works by Everett Millais, Holman Hunt and Allston Collins. This afternoon we will take a walking tour of Oxford, including the magnificent Christ Church with its outstanding Morris & Co. stained windows. Return to the hotel for approximately 16.30.
