Crete - From the Minoans to the Venetians – 7 nights from £1195pp

Crete has a remarkable history. Occupied since early prehistory, it saw the creation of the remarkable Bronze Age palace culture of the Minoans. Positioned on key trade routes, the island prospered through the Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods. For 400 years the island was the bread basket for Venice and her empire. Then it fell to the Ottomans, and eventually became united with a free Greece. Throughout their history, Cretans maintained their fierce sense of independence.

In the company of your lecturer, the historian Jeremy Paterson, you will have an opportunity to discover outstanding sites from all the periods of Crete’s epic history. Some are well-known, others much less visited; but all of them are set in the outstandingly beautiful countryside of central Crete. During your stay you will also have the opportunity to discover the Crete of today and a culture and heritage of which the islanders are fiercely proud.

The group size on this tour is limited to 25 passengers to ensure that all sites are accessible and that you get a high level of attention at all sites visited.

Your Lecturer - Jeremy Paterson

Jeremy taught Greek and Roman history for over forty years at Newcastle University. He has travelled widely in Greece and the Mediterranean. His enthusiasm for the ancient world was first inspired by reading Homer and then by his fascination with the archaeological discoveries at Mycenae and Knossos. He is much in demand as a speaker at home and in many of the classical countries of the Mediterranean, where he has accompanied many groups to sites and museums.
