Seat of the Roman Empire and birthplace of the Renaissance, Italy has a cultural pedigree that could turn any other country green with envy. This is possibly the only place in the world where you can officially overdose on art. There’s even a word for it – Stendhal’s syndrome – and the faded façades of Venice, the galleries of Florence and Rome’s classical monuments are enough to give anybody an attack. Beyond Italy’s glorious cities and its scattering of world-famous archaeological sites is a scenic smorgasbord of sea cliffs, vine-covered hills and castellated mountain peaks. Culture, countryside, food, art and adventure: if there’s a country that really does achieve the travel cliché of having it all then it’s Italy.
